V Rising Map Guide 2026 — Waygates, Regions & Best Base Locations

Vardoran is big — 5 regions, 36 square kilometers, and zero minimap markers for most of what you actually need. I spent my first 200 hours walking everywhere because I didn't understand the waygate system. This guide covers every waygate, every region's gear score range, and the base locations I've tested across 3 playthroughs. Updated for Invaders of Oakveil.

Vardoran 5-Region Map

⚡ In 30 Seconds: What You Need to Know About the Map

🗺️ Region order (south → north):

Farbane Woods (GS 0-20) → Dunley Farmlands (20-50) → Cursed Forest (50-68) → Silverlight Hills (65-80) → Gloomrot (80-91).

🚪 Can't teleport? Here's why:

Carrying Silver Ore, Silver Coins, or Soul Shards blocks waygates. Fix: set "Teleport Bound Items" to OFF in world settings. Doesn't affect combat — just kills the walking simulator.

🏰 Best base spot (PvE):

Cliff area southwest of Dunley Monastery. Central map position, 10 seconds from a waygate, water access for fishing.

🐎 Travel speed reference:

Horse = ~3× walking speed. Farbane to Gloomrot on horseback: ~12 minutes. With waygates unlocked: ~2 minutes (warp to nearest gate + short ride).

🚪 Waygate & Teleporter Guide

Understanding waygates is the single biggest time-saver in V Rising. I walked everywhere for my first 30 hours before I realized how many waygates I'd already passed without activating.

How Waygates Work

Waygates are teleportation portals scattered across Vardoran. Each one must be discovered and activated on foot before you can teleport to it. Once activated, you can instantly travel between any two activated waygates — free, no cooldown, no cost.

The #1 mistake new players make: Walking past a waygate without activating it. If you see the glowing blue portal ring on the ground, walk up to it and interact. An activated waygate shows on your map as a glowing circle. An inactivated one is a faint outline. Every time you enter a new region, make finding and activating the local waygate your first priority.

All 7 Major Waygate Locations

# Region Location Description Closest To When to Activate
1 Farbane Woods Central Farbane, west of the main road, near the bandit camp Starter area, Alpha Wolf, Bandit Camps GS 0 — first 10 minutes
2 Dunley Farmlands (South) Southern Dunley, just past the Farbane-Dunley border crossing Clive the Firestarter, Dunley Monastery GS 22 — as soon as you enter Dunley
3 Dunley Farmlands (North) Northern Dunley, on the road to the Cursed Forest border Octavian, Jade, Brighthaven GS 40 — after Iron tier upgrades
4 Cursed Forest Eastern edge of the Cursed Forest, near the main road Foulrot, Cyril, Gorecrusher GS 55 — as soon as you enter the Forest
5 Silverlight Hills Central Silverlight, on the approach to the main city Morian, Azariel, Church of Luminosa GS 68 — first stop in Silverlight
6 Gloomrot Southern Gloomrot, near the industrial district entrance Adam the Firstborn, Voltatia GS 80 — before any Gloomrot boss
7 Oakveil Northeast of Gloomrot, Oakveil expansion zone entrance Oakveil bosses and Mutant blood farming GS 85+ — endgame content

The Teleporter Restriction (and How to Fix It)

By default, you cannot use waygates while carrying:

  • Silver Ore or Silver Coins
  • Soul Shards (endgame artifacts)
  • Certain quest items (varies by patch)

This means every death in Silverlight Hills costs you a 5-minute horse ride back to your corpse. Every. Single. Time.

The fix I use on every playthrough: In world settings (accessible from the main menu before loading your world), set "Teleport Bound Items" to OFF. This lets you teleport freely regardless of inventory. It does NOT affect combat difficulty, enemy damage, or boss mechanics — it purely removes the walking penalty. This is the single biggest quality-of-life setting in V Rising. I played 200 hours without changing it and I regret every minute of those corpse runs.

🗺️ Region-by-Region Map Overview

Each region has a distinct layout, difficulty range, and set of threats. Here's what to expect when you cross each border — and how to survive.

🌲 Farbane Woods (South — GS 0 to 20)

The starter region. Dense forest, bandit camps, and the tutorial graveyard. Size: roughly 8 km², the largest single region. Layout: mostly open woodland with scattered bandit outposts. Easy to navigate — follow the roads. Key landmarks: Bandit Camp (central), Wolf Den (east), Graveyard (south). Danger zones: None at GS 10+. Even the V Blood bosses here are manageable with Copper weapons.

🌾 Dunley Farmlands (Central — GS 20 to 50)

The mid-game hub. Farmland, villages, and the Militia presence. Size: roughly 8 km². Layout: open farmland with dense village clusters. The roads are patrolled by Militia — stay in the fields if you're under-geared. Key landmarks: Dunley Monastery (center-west), Brighthaven (northeast), Haunted Iron Mine (southwest). Danger zones: Brighthaven barracks — paladins hit for 40% of your HP per swing if you're below GS 40.

🌿 Cursed Forest (East — GS 50 to 68)

The first hard zone. Constant curse debuff, poison mechanics, and enemies that punish overconfidence. Size: roughly 6 km². Layout: dense, dark forest with narrow paths. Easy to get cornered — always know your exit route. Key landmarks: Cyril's Forge (north), Spider Queen's Lair (east), Gorecrusher Arena (south). Danger zones: The curse effect stacks — don't linger. Poison pools near Spider Queen's Lair deal % HP damage.

☀️ Silverlight Hills (Northwest — GS 65 to 80)

The great filter. Constant sun damage, dense enemy patrols, and the hardest pre-endgame bosses. Size: roughly 7 km². Layout: city and hillside combination. Streets have shadow cover — use it. Key landmarks: Church of Luminosa (center), Silverlight City (south), Azariel's Temple (north). Danger zones: The main city streets — you'll pull 3+ paladins at once. Travel via rooftops or alley shadows.

⚡ Gloomrot (North — GS 80 to 91)

The endgame. Techno-magical factories, electrical hazards, and Dracula's domain. Size: roughly 7 km² (plus Oakveil ~4 km²). Layout: industrial corridors and multi-level factory floors. Tight spaces — melee builds suffer in the narrow hallways. Key landmarks: Power Plant (north), Factory (east), Dracula's Throne (center). Danger zones: The factory floor has electrified panels that deal % HP damage and stun. Watch your feet.

🏰 Best Castle Base Locations

Castle placement is the most permanent decision you make in V Rising. My first castle was in the middle of Farbane Woods, 3 minutes from the nearest waygate. I demolished it and rebuilt after 40 hours. Learn from my mistake.

What Makes a Good Castle Spot?

Three factors, ranked by importance:

  1. Waygate proximity (10 seconds or less): If you have to walk more than 10 seconds to a waygate, you'll spend hours of your life just commuting. This is #1 by a mile.
  2. Water access: Fishing generates infinite Blood Essence to fuel your servants. A waterside castle is self-sustaining.
  3. Central map position: Minimizes travel time to all regions. The sweet spot is Dunley Farmlands — equidistant to Farbane, Cursed Forest, and Silverlight.

Top 5 Base Locations (PvE)

Rank Location Waygate Proximity Water Access Best For
🥇 Dunley Monastery Cliffs (southwest) 10 seconds ✅ River All-purpose — central, safe, convenient
🥈 Farbane Woods (north border) 8 seconds ✅ Lake Early game starter base — build here first, move later
🥉 Cursed Forest (east road) 5 seconds ⚠️ Stream Mid-game farming outpost — fast boss farming
4 Silverlight Hills (south approach) 12 seconds ❌ No water Late-game Silverlight farming — stock potions here
5 Gloomrot (south district) 8 seconds ⚠️ Canal Endgame only — forward operating base for Dracula attempts

Best PvP Base Locations

PvP bases have a completely different priority list. Waygate proximity still matters, but defensibility is everything.

  • Silverlight Plateau (north): Elevated terrain with a single choke-point entrance. Place ranged servants on the cliff edge — they'll pick off raiders before they reach your walls.
  • Cursed Forest Cliff Overlook (east): Natural wall on three sides. Only one approach path — layer it with doors, traps, and servant patrols.
  • Gloomrot Factory District (underground level): The hardest base to find. Underground entrances are easy to defend with narrow corridors. Raiders often walk past without realizing a base is there.
The base I use every playthrough: Dunley Monastery Cliffs. Built it on my second playthrough, never moved. It's 10 seconds from the southern Dunley waygate, has river access, and I can reach any boss in Farbane, Dunley, or the Cursed Forest within 3 minutes. I keep a secondary outpost in Gloomrot for the endgame, but the Monastery cliff is home. Full castle building guide →

📈 Map Progression — Where to Go at Each Gear Score

If you're ever wondering "am I supposed to be here?" — this section is for you. Region difficulty is gated by gear score, not character level.

🟢 GS 0-20: Stay in Farbane Woods

Farm bandit camps, mine copper, kill the 8 progression bosses in Farbane. Do not cross into Dunley before GS 20 — Militia patrols will two-shot you. Priority: activate the central Farbane waygate immediately.

🟡 GS 20-50: Dunley Farmlands (your home for the next 20+ hours)

Enter Dunley from the southern border crossing. Activate the south Dunley waygate first. Progress through Clive → Polora → Quincey → Leandra → Terah → Octavian → Jade. Farm the Haunted Iron Mine relentlessly. Build your main castle somewhere in Dunley — you'll spend more time here than any other region.

🟠 GS 50-68: Cursed Forest

Enter from the Dunley-Cursed border (east road). Activate the Cursed Forest waygate immediately — it's the only one in the region. Bring poison resistance potions. Kill Foulrot first for Sanguine weapons, then Cyril for Dark Silver armor.

🔴 GS 65-80: Silverlight Hills

Enter at GS 68 minimum — ideally GS 70. This is the hardest open-world zone. Kill Morian FIRST for the Stormwing Form (flight). Then Henry → Matka → Azariel. Every death costs a long run back, so play carefully and use shadow paths.

🟣 GS 80-91: Gloomrot & Endgame

Enter at GS 80 minimum. Adam → Voltatia → Dracula. Build a forward base here — you'll need respawn proximity for Dracula attempts. This is the end of the map. After Dracula, Oakveil awaits if you have the expansion.

The progression rule I follow: If you're more than 5 GS below a region's minimum, the enemies aren't "challenging" — they're mathematically unfair. You'll deal reduced damage and take bonus damage. It's not a skill issue. Go back, craft upgrades, come back stronger. Full gear score roadmap →

Map & Travel FAQ

Can I teleport with Silver or Soul Shards in V Rising?
By default, no. Waygates block teleportation while you're carrying Silver Ore, Silver Coins, Soul Shards, or certain quest items. This is the single biggest time-waster in V Rising — every death in Silverlight means a 5-minute run back. The fix: In world settings, set "Teleport Bound Items" to OFF. This does not affect combat difficulty at all — it only removes the walking penalty.
Where are all the Waygates in V Rising?
There are 7 major Waygates: one in central Farbane Woods, two in Dunley Farmlands (south and north), one in Cursed Forest (east road), one in Silverlight Hills (central), one in Gloomrot (south district), and one in Oakveil. Each must be discovered on foot first before you can teleport to it. See the Waygate locations table above for exact descriptions.
Where is the best place to build a castle in V Rising?
For PvE: The cliff area southwest of the Dunley Monastery. Central map position, 10 seconds from a waygate, river access for fishing. For PvP: Silverlight Plateau (north) — elevated terrain with a single entrance. The #1 rule: Build within 10 seconds of a waygate. A castle in the middle of nowhere means 3 minutes of walking every time you return home. See the full base locations section above.
How big is the V Rising map?
Vardoran spans 5 major regions covering roughly 36 square kilometers of explorable terrain. From the southernmost Farbane Woods to the northernmost Gloomrot district, riding on horseback takes approximately 12-15 minutes end-to-end without waygates. The Oakveil expansion adds roughly 20% more map area northeast of Gloomrot.
Can I have multiple castles on the map?
Yes. You can build multiple castles as you progress — this is actually recommended. Keep a main castle in Dunley (central, permanent), then build small forward outposts in the Cursed Forest (for boss farming) and Gloomrot (for endgame attempts). Each castle needs its own Castle Heart, and your total servant count is shared across all castles.
