V Rising Best Base Locations Ranked (PvE, PvP & Solo)
The best overall base location in V Rising is Dunley Farmlands — it provides the best balance between resources, travel efficiency, and castle expansion space. But "best" depends entirely on your playstyle. This guide is not another list of coordinates. It's a decision framework to help you pick the right castle spot based on your server type, progression stage, and priorities. Updated for Invaders of Oakveil (Patch 1.2).
Once you pick your spot, learn how to build — room types, layouts, defense, servants, and garden optimization.

🧭 How to Choose the Best Base Location
Every base location is a trade-off. The "best" spot for a PvP clan player is the worst spot for a solo PvE player. Here are the four factors to weigh — in order of importance.
1. Resource Access
Your castle's proximity to key resources determines how much of your playtime is spent farming versus playing. Prioritize these resources by stage:
- Early game (GS 0-25): Copper Ore, Stone, Wood, Animal Hide, Blood Essence from creatures
- Mid game (GS 25-55): Iron Ore (most important — the Haunted Iron Mine in Dunley is the best spot), Quartz, Cotton, Wool, Horses
- Late game (GS 55-80): Dark Silver, Gem Dust, high-quality blood (80%+), Silver Ore, Scourgestone
- Endgame (GS 80-91): Gloomrot-specific plants, Power Cores, Sanguine materials, Mutant blood
2. Travel Efficiency
Waygate proximity is the #1 factor for non-PvP bases. If you have to walk more than 15 seconds to a waygate, you will waste hours of your life commuting across Vardoran. A waygate within 10 seconds means every region is accessible in under 2 minutes. A base 3 minutes from the nearest waygate means every single trip to farm, fight a boss, or help a friend starts with a 3-minute walk. Over a 100-hour playthrough, this adds up to literal hours of walking.
- Roads: Build near main roads — you travel faster on roads than off-road, and horse speed is significantly higher on paved paths.
- Zone borders: Being near a zone border lets you farm two regions without relocating. The Dunley-Farbane border is the most valuable border in the game.
3. Defense
Defense matters differently depending on your server type:
- PvE: Basic walls and servant patrols are enough. Prioritize convenience over defense — wandering enemies are a minor nuisance, not a threat.
- PvP: Defense is everything. Look for natural walls (cliffs, water), choke points (single entrances, narrow paths), and elevation (high ground for servant archers). A base with one entrance is worth 3x more than a base with four entrances, regardless of wall strength.
4. Expansion Space
Your first castle will be small. Your third castle will be massive. Pick a location with room to grow:
- Flat terrain: Building on slopes creates uneven floors that limit room placement. Flat ground gives you maximum flexibility for room layouts.
- Territory size: Castle territory expands as you upgrade your Castle Heart. Make sure the surrounding area isn't blocked by cliffs, water, or other players' territories.
- Multiple floors: On PvP servers, you'll want at least 3-4 floors for honeycomb defenses. Ensure the location has enough vertical clearance.
🏆 Best Overall Base Locations (Detailed)
These are the 6 locations I've tested across 3 full playthroughs. Each one serves a different purpose — pick based on what matters most to you.
1. Dunley Monastery Cliffs — Best Overall
Best for: PvE, General Purpose, Mid-Game Main Base
The cliff area southwest of the Dunley Monastery is, in my opinion, the single best castle location in V Rising for most players. I've built here on 2 out of 3 playthroughs and never regretted it. The location sits on a natural plateau with river access on one side and a cliff face on the other — giving you both water for fishing and a partial natural wall.
What makes this spot exceptional is its centrality. From here, you can reach any boss in Farbane Woods, Dunley Farmlands, or the Cursed Forest within 3 minutes via waygate. The southern Dunley waygate is a 10-second walk. The Haunted Iron Mine — the best Iron farming spot in the game — is a 30-second horse ride away.
I kept this as my main base through the entire endgame. Even when I built a forward outpost in Gloomrot for Dracula attempts, the Monastery cliff remained my crafting hub, servant headquarters, and storage center. The location scales from a 3-room starter shack to a 20-room castle without running out of space.
Nearby Resources:
- Iron Ore — Haunted Iron Mine (30 sec horse ride)
- Quartz — Dunley Quarry (45 sec)
- Cotton / Wool — Dunley Farms (20 sec)
- Horses — Dunley fields (abundant)
- Fish — River directly adjacent
Advantages:
- Central map position — equidistant to 4 out of 5 regions
- 10-second waygate access — the single biggest time-saver
- Water access for infinite fish → Blood Essence for servants
- Flat plateau top — easy to build large, organized room layouts
- Natural cliff protection on one side — reduces wall material costs
Disadvantages:
- Popular spot — on high-population servers, this location may be taken
- Not the most defensible for PvP (multiple approach angles)
- No nearby Silver or Dark Silver — you'll need a secondary outpost for late-game
2. Farbane Woods Central Plateau — Best Starter Base
Best for: Beginners, First Castle, Early Game Progression
South of the haunted church in central Farbane Woods lies a flat plateau that is, by design, the ideal starter castle location. The terrain is perfectly flat — no terraforming needed. The Farbane waygate is 8 seconds away. Copper Ore nodes and the Bandit Camp are within a minute's walk.
This is where I built my first castle, and it served me well for the first 15-20 hours of gameplay. The location is safe — the highest-level enemies nearby are level 25 bandits, and they don't aggro on your castle walls. You can learn the building mechanics without worrying about raids or high-level enemy patrols.
The key insight: don't stay here forever. Once you hit GS 25 and unlock Iron crafting, you should build a second castle in Dunley Farmlands. Keep the Farbane base as a resource outpost — it remains useful for Copper farming and as a waypoint for southern map traversal.
Nearby Resources:
- Copper Ore — multiple nodes within 60 seconds
- Stone — abundant throughout Farbane
- Wood — dense forest coverage
- Animal Hide — wolves and deer nearby
- Blood Essence — Bandit Camps and creature spawns
Advantages:
- Safest region in the game — no enemies above level 25
- 8-second waygate access
- Perfectly flat terrain — easiest building experience
- Low player competition on most servers
Disadvantages:
- No Iron, Quartz, or any mid-game resources
- Far from mid/late-game zones (long walks to Dunley, Silverlight)
- Outgrown by GS 25-30 — this is a temporary base, not a permanent home
3. Silverlight City Outskirts — Best Endgame PvE
Best for: Late-Game PvE, High-Quality Blood Farming, Dark Silver Production
Once you've hit GS 68+ and are ready to tackle the Silverlight Hills bosses, a base near the Silverlight City waygate becomes your most valuable asset. This location puts you within walking distance of Dark Silver nodes, the Church of Luminosa, and the paladin camps that drop 80-100% quality blood.
I build a secondary outpost here on every playthrough once I reach the late game. It doesn't need to be a full castle — a 4-room crafting station with a Garden, Alchemy Room, and storage is enough. The point is having a respawn point close to the hardest open-world zone so deaths don't cost you 5-minute corpse runs.
Nearby Resources:
- Dark Silver Ore — multiple nodes in Silverlight City
- Gem Dust — from high-level enemies and mining
- High-quality blood — paladins and soldiers (80-100% Scholar/Brute)
- Silver Ore — abundant throughout the region
Advantages:
- Closest spawn to the hardest pre-endgame content
- Best blood-farming location in the game
- Dark Silver and Gem Dust within walking distance
Disadvantages:
- Constant sun damage — need shadow cover and sun resistance
- High enemy density — patrols can aggro on your castle
- No water access at most buildable spots
- Not recommended as your only base — keep your main base in Dunley
4. Gloomrot Southern Bluff — Best PvP Defense
Best for: PvP, Defensive Players, Endgame
The Gloomrot Southern Bluff is the most defensible castle location in V Rising. It's an elevated plateau with cliff edges on three sides, meaning attackers can only approach from one direction — the ground-level path from the south. Any raiding party must funnel through a single choke point, making them easy targets for ranged servants and AoE spells.
This is the location I recommend to every PvP player who asks "where should I build?" The defensive advantage is not subtle — it's overwhelming. A 2-layer honeycomb defense on this plateau is equivalent to a 4-layer honeycomb on open ground, because the natural cliffs eliminate three approach vectors entirely.
Nearby Resources:
- Gloomrot-specific plants — for endgame potions
- Power Cores — from Gloomrot enemies
- High-tier ore — scattered throughout the region
- Canal water — limited but usable for fishing
Advantages:
- Unmatched defensibility — single entrance, cliffs on 3 sides
- Elevated position — servant archers have maximum range
- Close to endgame content — Dracula, Adam, Voltatia
- Low visibility — hard for raiders to scout from a distance
Disadvantages:
- Far from early/mid-game regions — long commute for low-level farming
- Only accessible at GS 80+ — can't build here until endgame
- Limited flat space — large clan castles may feel cramped
5. Dunley Farmlands Bridge Island — Best Clan PvP
Best for: Clan PvP, Large Castles, Territory Control
The Bridge Island in Dunley Farmlands is a unique location: a small island connected to the mainland by two bridges. Each bridge is a natural chokepoint that can be held by a single player with AoE spells. For clans, this is the ideal balance of central access and defensibility.
The island itself is large enough for a full clan castle with all room types, multiple floors, and servant quarters. Unlike the Gloomrot Bluff (which can feel cramped for 4+ players), the Bridge Island has room for everyone's crafting stations and private quarters.
Nearby Resources:
- Iron Ore — Haunted Iron Mine (90 sec)
- Quartz — Dunley Quarry (60 sec)
- Fish — surrounded by water on all sides
- Horses — Dunley fields (30 sec)
Advantages:
- Two natural chokepoints — easy to defend with 2 players
- Large buildable area — suitable for clan castles
- Central map position — good access to all regions
- Infinite fish from surrounding water
Disadvantages:
- Waygate is 15 seconds away — slightly longer than Monastery Cliffs
- Highly contested on PvP servers — expect competition for this spot
- Bridges work both ways — defenders can also be trapped on the island
6. Cursed Forest East Road — Best Solo Farming Outpost
Best for: Solo Players, Boss Farming, Quiet Play
The east road of the Cursed Forest, near the region's only waygate, is the best location for solo players who want minimal player interaction and maximum boss-farming efficiency. The waygate is 5 seconds away — the closest waygate proximity of any base location in the game.
The Cursed Forest is the least populated region on most servers. Players pass through for boss kills and leave. Building here means you'll rarely encounter other players, your resources won't be contested, and your castle won't attract raider attention. For solo players who value peace and quiet, this is the hidden gem.
Nearby Resources:
- Scourgestone — from Cursed Forest enemies
- Ghost Shrooms — for Invisibility Potions
- Poison-resistant plants — unique to this region
- Mid-tier ore — scattered throughout the forest
Advantages:
- Closest waygate proximity in the game (5 seconds)
- Minimal player traffic — quiet and uncontested
- Fast boss farming — Cyril, Gorecrusher, Foulrot all nearby
Disadvantages:
- Constant curse debuff — requires poison resistance
- Poor resource variety — no Iron, Dark Silver, or Cotton
- Uneven terrain — harder to build large, organized layouts
- Not suitable as a main base — use as a farming outpost

→🌱 Best Starter Base Locations
Your first base doesn't need to be perfect — it needs to be safe, functional, and close to early-game resources. You'll likely move it later.
For your first 15-20 hours, stay in Farbane Woods. The region is designed as a tutorial zone — enemies cap at level 25, resources are abundant, and you can learn building mechanics without pressure. The Central Plateau (south of the haunted church) is the best starter spot, but the Abandoned Farmstead (west) and Bandit Camp Overlook (north) are also solid choices.
The most important thing for a starter base: build within 10 seconds of the Farbane waygate. Everything else is secondary. You'll outgrow this base by GS 25-30 anyway, so don't overthink it — just get a roof over your crafting stations and start progressing.
🏡 Best PvE Base Locations
PvE bases prioritize convenience, beauty, and resource access. You're building a home, not a fortress.
For PvE players, the hierarchy is clear:
- Dunley Monastery Cliffs — The gold standard. Central, beautiful views, water access, and the best resource proximity in the game. This is where you build your permanent home.
- Silverlight City Outskirts — Your late-game forward base. Build it when you reach GS 68. Keep it small — 4-6 rooms max. The purpose is respawn proximity, not full crafting capability.
- Farbane Woods (any flat area near waygate) — Starter base only. Functional, safe, temporary.
PvE players should not build in Gloomrot as a main base. Gloomrot's advantages are almost entirely defensive, which you don't need on PvE. The region is far from everything, the terrain is difficult to build on, and the electrical hazards are annoying to navigate every time you return home.
⚔️ Best PvP Base Locations
On PvP servers, your location is your first, last, and best line of defense. A well-placed base repels 80% of raids before they begin.
PvP base selection follows a completely different logic than PvE. The priority stack is:
- Defensibility above all else. Natural barriers (cliffs, water, elevation) are worth more than any wall upgrade. A single-entrance location reduces your defensive burden by 75%.
- Waygate proximity — but not TOO close. You want waygate access, but building directly on top of a waygate makes you a high-traffic target. Aim for 10-15 seconds away — close enough for convenience, far enough that random travelers don't stumble on your walls.
- Low visibility. The best PvP base is the one raiders never find. Obscured locations (forest cover, elevation changes, underground areas) add a layer of stealth defense that no wall can provide.
PvP Location Rankings:
| Tier | Location | Defense Rating | Best Server Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Gloomrot Southern Bluff | Single entrance, 3 cliff sides, elevated | Solo/Duo PvP |
| S | Dunley Bridge Island | Two bridge chokepoints, water barrier | Clan PvP |
| A | Silverlight Plateau (north) | Elevated, single choke, good servant coverage | Solo PvP |
| A | Gloomrot Factory (underground) | Hidden entrance, narrow corridors | Solo PvP (stealth) |
| B | Cursed Forest Cliff Overlook | Natural walls on 3 sides | Solo PvP (quiet server) |
🧛 Best Solo Base Locations
Solo players have unique needs: efficiency over size, minimal travel time, and locations that don't attract attention.
As a solo player, you're managing everything yourself — resource farming, boss killing, crafting, and defense. Your base location should minimize the friction of doing everything alone:
- Smaller is better. A 6-8 room castle is plenty for a solo player. Don't build a 20-room clan castle you can't fill — the extra space just means more walls to maintain and more ground to cover during raids.
- Central location is non-negotiable. You don't have clanmates to farm resources in other regions. Being in Dunley Farmlands means you can reach every farming zone quickly.
- Quiet spots beat popular spots. On PvP servers, avoid the "meta" locations that every guide recommends. Raiders check those first. The Cursed Forest east road or a hidden Gloomrot underground spot gives you the same functionality with 90% less foot traffic.
My solo recommendation: Dunley Monastery Cliffs for PvE, Cursed Forest East Road for quiet PvP, Gloomrot Southern Bluff for competitive PvP. If you're on a high-population PvP server and all the "best" spots are taken, the Gloomrot underground factory entrance is the most underrated solo spot — almost nobody builds there, and the narrow corridors are a nightmare for raiders.
📈 Base Locations by Progression Stage
Your ideal base location changes as you progress. Here's where to build at each stage of the game.
| Stage | Recommended Area | Gear Score | Reason | Castle Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early Game | Farbane Woods | GS 0-25 | Safe, abundant Copper and Stone, tutorial-friendly | Starter base (4-6 rooms) |
| Mid Game | Dunley Farmlands | GS 25-55 | Central position, Iron Ore, Quartz, Cotton — your permanent home | Main base (10-15 rooms) |
| Late Game | Silverlight Hills or Cursed Forest | GS 55-80 | Dark Silver, Gem Dust, high-quality blood — build a secondary outpost | Farming outpost (4-6 rooms) |
| Endgame | Gloomrot | GS 80-91 | Endgame boss proximity, best PvP defense — forward operating base | Forward base (4-8 rooms) |

→⚠️ Common Base Building Mistakes
I've made every mistake on this list. Learn from my wasted hours.
- Building too far from a waygate. This is the #1 new-player mistake. "But this spot is so pretty!" — you will regret it after your 50th 3-minute walk home. 10 seconds or less from a waygate. Non-negotiable.
- Building in a ditch. My first castle was in a low-elevation Farbane spot. Every rain flooded my crafting room. Check the terrain elevation before you place your Castle Heart. Avoid depressions, riverbeds, and any area where water visibly pools.
- Choosing a location with no room to expand. Your first castle will be 4 rooms. Your third castle might be 15+. If you're boxed in by cliffs, water, or other player territories, you'll have to relocate — which costs time even if materials are refunded.
- Ignoring the sun. In Silverlight Hills and parts of Dunley, the sun is a constant killer. If your castle entrance faces west (sunset direction), you'll walk into blinding sunlight every evening. Build with the entrance facing east or north.
- Building on a slope. Sloped terrain creates uneven floors that look terrible and limit room placement. Flat ground is worth traveling an extra 30 seconds for.
- PvE players over-investing in defense. You don't need honeycomb walls or bait rooms on PvE. Build for crafting efficiency — open floor plans, adjacent rooms, ground-floor Castle Heart. Spend those extra materials on upgrading your gear instead.
- Not scouting before building. Walk the perimeter of your intended location before placing the Castle Heart. Check for enemy patrols, resource node proximity, and waygate access. Spend 10 minutes scouting to save 10 hours of regret.
